Training Session Content
During training there are various types of practice we use to help develop players. Here are some common examples: -
Technical game: We prefer not to use drills as this only leads to improving technique in a closed environment. This can be practiced at home. Instead we develop technique into skill by practicing within small competitive games that are devised to focus on specific situations in the game. This allows us to isolate the technique and develop it into a skill that transfers to a number of dynamic situations.
Small sided game: This allows us to progress to developing the skills into a more realistic environment. Having fewer numbers per side allows each of the players to get more practice, whilst maintaining a level of realism. We can also coach general principles of attack, defence and transition.
Phase of Play: This is where 1/2 to 2/3’s of a full pitch is used to play a 9v9, 10v10 or 11v11 practice focusing on either attack or defence. This creates as realistic situation as we can whilst focusing on attacking or defensive patterns of play.
11v11: When we are focusing on a more general topic where transition from attack to defence is important, we practice within an 11v11 match. We will often place conditions on the game to help simulate the conditions of a realistic scenario within the game.
