9) Defending and attacking crosses Minimize
Strategy
For the defence to make it as hard as possible to score from crosses.
For the attackers to time their runs to get as many shots on target as possible.
For the crosser to pass the cross to a dangerous area on a regular basis.
Organisation
A wide and short pitch is used so that crosses can be practice in opposite directions to keep the practice continuous and so that players practice both arts interchangeably to create realism.
The pitch must not be too short or players will be lazy and not make much effort with runs.
It also cramps their space.

11v11
Players play a normal game of football except the ball must initially come from a crossed position.

Full back's must press wide to the crosser to create enough realism but not so much that the crosser has a poor ratio of success.

Players are coached to defend or attack crosses.
When the ball is cleared, players may volley home to create realism but if the chance is gone should pass wide to ensure a high number of crosses are played.

Key Points - Defending

1) ensure the front player is in front of his man with his body open to see a late run.
2) starting position of the keeper and assessment of flight.
a) body open, b) 2/3-3/4 back in goal, c) off line
3) keeper to assess flight, move into position early, call early and attack late
4) Players should have their body open to pick up runners and be aware of checked runs. They should use their body to force their way in front of players at the appropriate time.

5) After a clearance, once the line has been squeezed up and players have lost their position by pressing into midfield, they should make quick recovery runs before sitting inside and behind their man.
6) Players must jump with their man and use their physical presence to ensure even if the opponent wins the header, he doesn't have sufficient force or direction to score a goal.

Key Points - Attacking
1) There must be players in the danger areas early, preferably the two strikers. They help tie up the defenders and to be in the dangerous areas should the ball come. They can still make runs but they tend to be towards or away from the ball. One of the best runs is to run late at the near post and get in front of the near post defender.

2) Centre midfielders to time runs so one bends run to attack ball and the other holds for the pull back.

3) Opposite wide midfielder holds his run and bends his run to attack at the far post late.

4) One of the centre halfs pushes into the midfield hole ready for the clearances.

5) Timing of runs, crossed runs and creating space
e.g. below where one forward creates space for the other.

11v11 extension
play normal game with restricted pitch - this makes play more realistic so players start from a variety of starting positions.

Goal directly from cross = 3 goals
Otherwise = 1 goal.
