6) Defence marking tight + Striker holding up ball Minimize
Strategy
For the defenders to put the opposing player under as much pressure as possible on receiving the ball
and guiding the ball carrier towards where we are strongest as a team.
For the strikers to hold up the ball on a consistent basis without going too far away from the goal in the process.

Organisation - Practice 1
The team splits into groups of 4 and enter the grid.
2 defenders and 1 attacker stand one side and an attacker the other.
The attacker passes the ball to his team mate who attempts to hold up the ball.
The marking defender tries to put enough pressure on the ball to make the defender lose possession.
He also tries to push his towards his team mate to double team the player.
Should the attacker hold up the ball, he should aim to score by dribbling over the end line.
He may bring in his supporting team mate to create a 2v2.

Defending Key Points
1) try to anticipate to get in front of the attacker. Don't be afraid of selling yourself on the outside if there is defensive cover on the inside.

1) The initial positions of the players.
The full back (right) is looking to win the ball on the outside

2) The full back trying to win the ball on the outside

3) The full back not able to win the ball
so pushes him inside instead

4) The Centre Half supports on the inside to cover when the full back is turned on the inside

 2) Make sure that on the attacker's 1st touch there is considerable physical impact
to force his 1st touch to be poor.
3) Attempt to tackle the 1st touch by challenging the control with your foot behind the attacker's foot (see below)

4) Follow the striker into midfield if his touch takes him there so he has no way of turning (other defenders should then close in to cover).
5) If the striker passes off, be aware to instantly drop to cover the 1-2.

Attacking Key Points
1) Push back onto the defender early so you know where he is and so you can predict the impact (see below)
2) Give yourself a 45 degree stance so you can have your body open, make it easy to control and have sufficient distance to guard off the defender (see below)

3) Move across the line (not towards the ball) to create space to receive.
4) On occasion, check back to receive (but not too late so the passer isn't fooled)
5) have a very low stance to take the opponent's impact and lean into him but do not let him take your weight or you will lose balance.
6) Show your surface area very early to make control easy
7) control with your front foot (furthest away from defender) to make it harder to tackle

Incorrect
Control is on back foot and too close to defender. Easy for the defender to smash through the tackle

Correct
Although taking on the back foot, the foot is leading and by leaning into player, has created anough space for the touch

8) Only spin your opponent if he sells himself either way and the defensive cover isn't too close
(use your arms to help you shield your opponent off as you spin).

Here the defender is tight but not tight enough. By putting his hand on the opponent's back,
he risks giving away a foul. Instead, he should be closer and touching with his chest

Organisation - Practice 2
Attackers score by passing the ball into any of the small pop up goals.
Players are restricted in where they can play: -
1) Players must stay in their given zones
2) Players in zone 1 can pass to each other and aim to pass the ball to a team mate in zone 3
3) Zone 3 defenders aim to intercept the pass, if they intercept, they can score maximum 2 touches into a goal. If they fail, they must pass into zone 1
4) zone 3 strikers have only 1 touch to score, or more to pass
5) Zone 3 defenders aim to force the attacker into a poor touch to lose possession. If they win possession, they should pass to players in zone 2.
6) Zone 3 attackers can pass to zone 1 attackers.
7) Zone 1 attackers can only score with 1 touch
8) Players are welcome to create passing movements and shouldn't just restrict play to the monotonous straight line football of passing to the striker.

(body open - can hold up - but controlled with back foot so easier to tackle
see attacking point 7)

11v11 Practice
Condition - defenders not allowed to pass into midfield
